Dakar, October 4, 2024\u2014The Committee to Protect Journalists called on the Senegalese authorities to ensure journalists can operate without fear, following the recent detentions of journalists\u00a0Kader Dia<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Cheikh Yerim Seck<\/a>\u00a0and attacks on Ngon\u00e9 Diop and Maty Sarr Niang in the capital, Dakar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSenegalese authorities must stop arresting journalists for their work and hold accountable the attackers of Ngon\u00e9 Diop and Maty Sarr Niang,\u201d said Angela Quintal, head of CPJ\u2019s Africa Program, in New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe authorities should take swift action<\/a> to prevent furthering the previous government\u2019s harm to Senegal\u2019s press freedom, characterized by repeated detentions of journalists, media outlet suspensions, and other attacks on reporters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On September 30, the police special cybersecurity division arrested Dia over comments he made during a September 23Sen TV online broadcast<\/a> about alleged police corruption according to Fatima Diop, host of the Sen TV program, where Dia is a regular commentator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Separately, Seck, founder of YouTube news site Yerim Post TV, which he no longer runs, was detained on October 1 over a September 27 7TV program<\/a> in which he questioned the accuracy of a budget-related announcement<\/a> by Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, his lawyer Mamadou Gueye Mbow told CPJ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Thursday, Dia<\/a> and Seck<\/a> were released and had their cases dropped, according to their lawyers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On October 2, several supporters of opposition leader Bougane Gu\u00e8ye Dany insulted Diop, a reporter for the privately owned news site Sans Limites, and prevented her<\/a> from covering Dany\u2019s arrival for questioning at the cybercrime division.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The supporters also slapped Niang, another Sans Limites reporter, in the head and criticized her coverage of Dany, according to Diop\u2019s video<\/a> of the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mame Gor Ngom, director of the government\u2019s information and communication office, acknowledged CPJ\u2019s request for comment but had not yet provided a response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CPJ\u2019s calls and messages to Mouhamed Gu\u00e8ye, spokesman for the Senegalese police, and Moussa Niang, general coordinator of Dany\u2019s movement, went unanswered.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
