He passed through routine public-health screening at Nairobi&#8217;s main airport and was later taken to a hospital by a relative, Duale said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was eventually transferred to an isolation facility established during the COVID-19 pandemic after doctors suspected a viral haemorrhagic fever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Laboratory tests confirmed infection with the\u00a0Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, a relatively rare strain for which there is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The patient developed fever, chills, severe fatigue and weakness, painful swallowing, muscle pain and bleeding under the skin, Duale said. He died at 11:30 p.m. on Monday, and authorities planned a burial under strict public-health protocols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The case comes as Congo battles its largest recorded Ebola outbreak. The World Health Organization has reported\u00a08,463 cases and 4,082 deaths\u00a0in the current outbreak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Medical charity M\u00e9decins Sans Fronti\u00e8res has warned that the true toll could be higher because gaps in surveillance and testing in the conflict-affected country may mean many infections go undetected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MSF said on Monday that Ebola was spreading &#8220;like a megafire&#8221;, with new hotspots emerging in North Kivu province, which borders Ituri, where the outbreak began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since early September, North Kivu has accounted for nearly 40% of newly confirmed cases nationwide, according to MSF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kenya&#8217;s case is the latest sign that the outbreak is becoming a wider regional threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Uganda also reported Ebola cases earlier this year, with two people dying before the World Health Organization declared the country free of the disease in August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ebola spreads through direct contact with infected bodily fluids, including blood and vomit.
