The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) evacuated 266 wounded people across South Sudan in the first half of 2026, more than 50% higher than during the same period last year, as renewed fighting overwhelmed the country’s already fragile health system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ICRC said escalating violence since late 2025 has displaced thousands of people, disrupted livelihoods and sharply increased the number of civilians requiring emergency surgical care, while access to healthcare continues to deteriorate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As South Sudan marks 15 years of independence, the organization said conflict, insecurity, climate shocks and the arrival of people fleeing the war in neighbouring Sudan have driven humanitarian needs higher despite shrinking international funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Conflict is not getting any better and the humanitarian needs are also on the rise,” ICRC Health Coordinator Rose Ochieng said. “Funding has gone down, service provision at all levels of health care is reduced, and this causes a lot of strain in hospitals.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since 2014, the ICRC has evacuated more than 5,000 patients needing life-saving surgery, most by air to Juba Military Hospital, one of the country’s main trauma referral centres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hospital’s surgical caseload has risen by nearly 30% in the first six months of 2026 compared with a year earlier, pushing the ICRC-supported surgical department beyond its intended capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the patients, Ngor Gatluak, was airlifted from Agany in Jonglei State after being shot in the arm during fighting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I was shot in my arm during one of the battles. There is no hospital in our area, so I was taken from Agany for treatment. I was later referred to this hospital. I am feeling much better now, and I hope to return home soon,” Gatluak said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ICRC said many conflict-affected and remote communities remain cut off from life-saving medical care because of insecurity, poor roads and weak communications, placing additional pressure on emergency referrals, surgery, rehabilitation and mental health services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The agency said it would continue working with South Sudan’s Ministry of Health and the South Sudan Red Cross to ensure access to emergency surgical care and urged all parties to the conflict to protect health workers and medical facilities, facilitate humanitarian access and respect international humanitarian law.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
