Human Rights Watch (HRW) has accused the National Basketball Association (NBA) of risking involvement in \u201csportswashing\u201d by deepening its commercial partnerships with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), a country the rights group says faces serious allegations of human rights abuses at home and abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The warning comes as the 2026 NBA Finals continue, with Emirates airline branding prominently displayed during one of the world’s most-watched basketball events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement released Wednesday, HRW said the NBA’s growing financial and promotional ties with the UAE could help improve the Gulf state’s international image while diverting attention from allegations of repression, labor abuses, and its reported involvement in Sudan’s devastating civil war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe NBA will be prominently donning Emirates logos during the 2026 NBA Finals as evidence of the UAE\u2019s military support to Sudan\u2019s abusive Rapid Support Forces mounts,\u201d said Joey Shea, Human Rights Watch’s senior UAE researcher. \u201cInstead of using basketball to whitewash UAE abuses, the NBA should use this high-profile opportunity to speak out about the country\u2019s human rights record, particularly the UAE\u2019s role in Sudan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The criticism centers on recent findings by Human Rights Watch that Colombian private military contractors, allegedly hired through a UAE-based company, passed through Emirati military facilities before being deployed to Sudan in support of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The RSF has been accused by international organizations of committing widespread atrocities during its conflict with Sudan’s military.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HRW said the new evidence adds to a growing body of reports suggesting the UAE has provided support that has strengthened the RSF’s operational capacity despite repeated denials by Emirati authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UAE has consistently rejected accusations that it is providing military assistance to the RSF, maintaining that its involvement in Sudan is strictly humanitarian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the past five years, the NBA has significantly expanded its relationship with the UAE. In 2021, the league signed a multi-year agreement with Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism to host NBA games in the emirate. Earlier this year, the two sides announced a nine-year extension reportedly worth more than $300 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, Emirates airline, owned by the state-controlled Emirates Group, entered into a major sponsorship agreement with the NBA in 2024. Reuters reported the deal could generate approximately $500 million annually in advertising revenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human Rights Watch argues that these partnerships create a risk that the NBA could become a vehicle for enhancing the UAE’s global reputation while concerns over human rights remain unresolved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The organization said it had written to the NBA requesting information about the league’s human rights due diligence procedures and asking whether any contractual arrangements limit the ability of league officials, employees, or players to publicly discuss human rights issues in the UAE. HRW said the NBA had not responded at the time of publication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rights group also urged the league to develop a comprehensive human rights risk mitigation strategy consistent with the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, which require companies to identify and address potential human rights impacts associated with their operations and business relationships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A coalition of civil society organizations has likewise called on the NBA to suspend its partnership with the UAE while allegations of Emirati involvement in Sudan’s conflict persist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sudan’s civil war, which erupted in April 2023, has triggered one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. According to international agencies, more than 14 million people have been displaced, including over 4 million who have fled the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond Sudan, Human Rights Watch highlighted concerns about domestic rights conditions in the UAE, including restrictions on freedom of expression, the imprisonment of political dissidents, and labor rights issues affecting migrant workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The organization cited the continued detention of prominent Emirati human rights defender Ahmed Mansoor, who has been imprisoned since 2017, as well as concerns over the kafala sponsorship system that governs many migrant workers in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe NBA and its officials and sponsors should address the risk of being used for sportswashing by speaking out and allowing players to raise concerns about the country’s human rights record,\u201d Shea said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
