{"id":1922,"date":"2026-05-11T13:10:16","date_gmt":"2026-05-11T13:10:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/goldentimessouthsudan.com\/?p=1922"},"modified":"2026-05-11T13:10:17","modified_gmt":"2026-05-11T13:10:17","slug":"washington-raises-stakes-over-machar-detention","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/goldentimessouthsudan.com\/index.php\/2026\/05\/11\/washington-raises-stakes-over-machar-detention\/","title":{"rendered":"Washington Raises Stakes Over Machar Detention"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\"><sub><sup><em>First Vice President, Riek Machar Ten<\/em>y<\/sup><\/sub><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sub>Monday, 11 May 2026 | Author: Andrew Michael | File Photo| GT-News |<\/sub><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A senior US diplomat has urged South Sudan\u2019s leaders to take \u201curgent action\u201d to restore peace and use the country\u2019s oil wealth to improve public services, while criticising the detention of First Vice President Riek Machar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nick Checker, the US State Department\u2019s Senior Bureau Official for African Affairs, visited Juba from May 7-8 for talks with senior South Sudanese officials, according to a statement released by Washington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the meetings, Checker outlined US priorities in South Sudan, including promoting peace, reducing dependence on foreign aid, improving cooperation on immigration and border security, and ending what the United States described as \u201cpredatory practices\u201d targeting humanitarian organisations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The US official called for dialogue among parties to the 2018 Revitalised Peace Agreement, which formally ended a five-year civil war that killed hundreds of thousands of people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Checker said it was \u201cfarcical\u201d to claim meaningful dialogue was taking place while Machar \u2014 leader of the SPLM-IO opposition movement and head of the second-largest party to the peace agreement \u2014 remained under arrest and on trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added that although the 2018 agreement was \u201cflawed\u201d, it remained the basis of legitimacy for the transitional government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The remarks come amid mounting international concern over delays in implementing the peace accord and preparations for elections expected in December 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Washington also criticised South Sudan\u2019s management of public finances in the oil-producing nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The United States said it had provided more than $9.5 billion in assistance to South Sudan since independence in 2011, while the country\u2019s leaders had reportedly received more than $25 billion in oil revenues over the same period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Checker accused political leaders of using recurring crises and promises of reform to attract donor support while obstructing the delivery of humanitarian assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said South Sudan\u2019s leaders should use public revenues to pay salaries, invest in health and education, and support humanitarian operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor years prior to independence, the SPLM claimed to want to end marginalization of the South by Khartoum, yet we have seen South Sudan\u2019s own leaders perpetuate that marginalization,\u201d Checker said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South Sudanese authorities had not publicly responded to the remarks by Monday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>First Vice President, Riek Machar Teny Monday, 11 May 2026 | Author: Andrew Michael | File Photo| GT-News | A senior US diplomat has urged South Sudan\u2019s leaders to take \u201curgent action\u201d to restore peace and use the country\u2019s oil wealth to improve public services, while criticising the detention of First Vice President Riek Machar.
