{"id":1857,"date":"2026-04-07T15:04:24","date_gmt":"2026-04-07T15:04:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/goldentimessouthsudan.com\/?p=1857"},"modified":"2026-04-07T15:04:25","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T15:04:25","slug":"un-backed-mobile-court-delivers-rare-justice-in-south-sudans-mundri","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/goldentimessouthsudan.com\/index.php\/2026\/04\/07\/un-backed-mobile-court-delivers-rare-justice-in-south-sudans-mundri\/","title":{"rendered":"UN-backed mobile court delivers rare justice in South Sudan\u2019s Mundri"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em><sub>Tuesday, 7 April 2026 | Author \u2013 Alex Onyango | Nairobi-Kenya | File photo|\u00a0GT-News |<\/sub><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A United Nations-supported mobile court has concluded hearings in South Sudan\u2019s Mundri region, securing convictions in serious criminal cases and offering rare access to justice in an area where formal courts are largely absent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The court, which sat from\u00a018 to 31 March, heard\u00a030 cases\u2014 including\u00a028 criminal and two civil matters\u2014 resulting in\u00a014 convictions and 16 acquittals, according to officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the cases were\u00a0nine murder trials, reflecting the scale of violent crime in the area.\u00a0Three defendants were convicted, receiving sentences ranging from\u00a0six years to life imprisonment, while three cases were dismissed and three suspects acquitted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The proceedings also exposed the\u00a0extent of sexual and gender-based violence\u00a0in Greater Mundri.\u00a0Six people were convicted, including for rape, in what officials say marks a significant moment for survivors, many of whom were able to pursue justice through a formal legal process for the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mobile courts are frequently used in South Sudan to bring justice services closer to remote or conflict-affected communities, where weak infrastructure and insecurity limit access to the legal system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Mundri court was supported by the\u00a0UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), with funding from the\u00a0Norwegian government. UNMISS said it provided legal and logistical assistance, as well as protection measures for survivors, families and defendants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This included\u00a0psychosocial support, legal preparation for witnesses, and transport and accommodation \u2014 all aimed at ensuring participation and fairness in proceedings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initiative is part of wider efforts to strengthen South Sudan\u2019s fragile justice system, reduce\u00a0prolonged detention, and ease\u00a0overcrowding in prisons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For many in Mundri, the court\u2019s presence signalled more than legal action \u2014 it offered a sense that accountability, long out of reach, may be slowly taking hold.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tuesday, 7 April 2026 | Author \u2013 Alex Onyango | Nairobi-Kenya | File photo|\u00a0GT-News | A United Nations-supported mobile court has concluded hearings in South Sudan\u2019s Mundri region, securing convictions in serious criminal cases and offering rare access to justice in an area where formal courts are largely absent.
