Sarah Nyanath Elijah Yong, outlined a comprehensive strategy to establish and upgrade national museums, archives, and heritage systems. The initiative seeks to document South Sudan\u2019s history \u2014 including its liberation struggle and achievements \u2014 while strengthening institutions responsible for safeguarding historical records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Minister Nyanath said the plan is rooted in a directive from President Kiir for transformative reforms in the culture sector, with a focus on fostering peace and unity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCulture is the foundation of national identity and cohesion,\u201d she said, adding that it plays a crucial role in uniting South Sudan\u2019s 64 tribes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also underscored the need for structured national recognition of key historical dates such as May 16 and May 19, noting that while they are commemorated, they lack formal institutional frameworks. Establishing national museums, archives, and heroes\u2019 monuments, she said, would help address these gaps and give proper recognition to the country\u2019s history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A major concern raised during the briefing was the large number of South Sudanese cultural artifacts held abroad. According to the Minister, significant collections remain in Sudan, Kenya, and the United Kingdom. She reaffirmed the government\u2019s commitment to pursuing their return through international mechanisms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking ahead, Nyanath said the Ministry envisions culture not only as a tool for preservation but also as a driver of economic growth, particularly through tourism and creative industries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>President Kiir welcomed the initiative, stressing the urgency of protecting and reclaiming South Sudan\u2019s heritage. He noted that many cultural sites, artifacts, and even burial grounds have been altered, renamed, or lost over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The President directed the Ministry to identify missing heritage assets and take concrete steps toward their recovery.
