{"id":1787,"date":"2026-03-09T13:58:06","date_gmt":"2026-03-09T13:58:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/goldentimessouthsudan.com\/?p=1787"},"modified":"2026-03-09T13:59:02","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T13:59:02","slug":"somaliland-journalist-held-without-charge-since-february-rights-group-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/goldentimessouthsudan.com\/index.php\/2026\/03\/09\/somaliland-journalist-held-without-charge-since-february-rights-group-says\/","title":{"rendered":"Somaliland journalist held without charge since February, rights group says"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\"><sub><em>Journalist Ahmed-Zaki Ibrahim Mohamud <\/em><\/sub><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><sub>Monday, 9 March 2026 | Author \u2013 Alex Onyango | Nairobi-Kenya |\u00a0<a href=\"Photo: Courtesy of Abdirizak Ibrahim\"><em>Screenshot: NTV Kenya\/YouTube<\/em>\u00a0<\/a><\/sub><\/em><sub><em>|<\/em><\/sub><em><sub> GT-News |<\/sub><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A journalist in Somaliland has been held without formal charges since late February after unidentified individuals raided his media outlet and arrested him in the capital, Hargeisa, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ahmed-Zaki Ibrahim Mohamud, founder of the online outlet\u00a0Warrame Media, was detained on the evening of\u00a0February 22\u00a0when individuals believed to be security officers stormed the organisation\u2019s offices, according to the Somaliland Journalists Association (SOLJA), his lawyer and family members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The New York-based CPJ on Friday called for his immediate release, saying authorities had failed to present charges nearly two weeks after his arrest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAhmed-Zaki Ibrahim Mohamud joins a long list of journalists in Somaliland who have been arrested and held under dubious circumstances in recent months,\u201d said\u00a0Muthoki Mumo, CPJ\u2019s Africa programme coordinator. \u201cNearly two weeks after taking this journalist into custody, authorities have failed to formally present charges in court.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ahmed-Zaki\u2019s family said they first learned about his arrest through social media posts on\u00a0February 23\u00a0and initially could not determine where he was being held.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following day, they discovered he was detained at the\u00a0Criminal Investigation Department (CID)\u00a0headquarters in Hargeisa, although it remains unclear where he was taken immediately after his arrest, according to his lawyer\u00a0Abdifitah Saleban Abukar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Family members and the lawyer said authorities initially denied them access to the journalist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On\u00a0February 24, Ahmed-Zaki appeared before the\u00a0Marodi-Jeh Regional Court, which ordered that he be held for seven days while investigators prepared their case, according to SOLJA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Relatives were briefly allowed to visit him on\u00a0February 26. During the meeting, Ahmed-Zaki told them he believed his arrest was politically motivated following the publication of interviews with a former rebel commander and a member of parliament critical of President<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi\u2019s\u00a0administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On\u00a0March 4, the court extended his detention by three more days as prosecutors prepared to file charges, his lawyer said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ahmed-Zaki was later transferred to\u00a0Mandhera Prison, a high-security facility about\u00a095 km (60 miles) northeast of Hargeisa, according to his brother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Press freedom groups say journalists in Somaliland have faced increasing pressure over the past year, with several reporters and media workers detained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in\u00a01991, though it has not gained widespread international recognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CPJ said it had sought comment from the\u00a0Somaliland presidency, the Ministry of Information and police authorities, but had not received a response.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Journalist Ahmed-Zaki Ibrahim Mohamud Monday, 9 March 2026 | Author \u2013 Alex Onyango | Nairobi-Kenya |\u00a0Screenshot: NTV Kenya\/YouTube\u00a0| GT-News | A journalist in Somaliland has been held without formal charges since late February after unidentified individuals raided his media outlet and arrested him in the capital, Hargeisa, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).
