{"id":1774,"date":"2026-02-13T07:00:05","date_gmt":"2026-02-13T07:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/goldentimessouthsudan.com\/?p=1774"},"modified":"2026-02-13T07:00:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-13T07:00:07","slug":"us-condemns-south-sudans-leaders-for-choosing-war-over-peace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/goldentimessouthsudan.com\/index.php\/2026\/02\/13\/us-condemns-south-sudans-leaders-for-choosing-war-over-peace\/","title":{"rendered":"US condemns South Sudan\u2019s leaders for choosing war over peace"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\"><sub><em>Ambassador Jennifer Locetta<\/em><\/sub><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sub>Friday, 13 February 2026 | Author \u2013 Alex Onyango | Nairobi-Kenya | File Photo | GT-News | South Sudan | Juba |<\/sub><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The United States\u2019 Alternative Representative for Special Political Affairs, Ambassador Jennifer Locetta, said\u00a0South Sudan\u2019s leaders have systematically undermined their independence goal, and they have repeatedly pushed the country back to the brink of war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a press statement extended to this outlet, Locetta stated that the military operations across the Greater Equatoria and Greater Upper Nile network provide stark evidence of South Sudan\u2019s willful actions to move further from peace and stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The US senior official said the violence across these two regions has resulted in the displacement of thousands of civilians, forced aid organizations to suspend their operations, and caused the immediate evacuation of UNMISS personnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said these actions directly obstruct UNMISS\u2019s ability to protect civilians and catastrophically worsen a dire humanitarian emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe strongly condemn South Sudan\u2019s leaders\u2019 actions and urge all parties to immediately cease offensive military operations, withdraw all forces, and ensure unimpeded humanitarian access to affected populations,\u201d Locetta asserted&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are also concerned by the transitional government\u2019s repeated unilateral amendments to the Revitalized Agreement. Any revisions to the agreement must be achieved through transparent, inclusive dialogue involving all signatories, rather than through unilateral action,\u2019 she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The United States government took note of the UN\u2019s February 3 White Note on South Sudan\u2019s progress on UNMISS\u2019s Contingency Plans; however, the US government urged UN Security Council members to continue pressuring the transitional government to lift all remaining impediments to UNMISS\u2019s operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe condemn the host country\u2019s government\u2019s interference, which has imposed unnecessary costs on UNMISS. These financial burdens \u2013 paid for by this international community \u2013 cannot go unaddressed. South Sudan must be held financially accountable for these costs,\u201d Locetta said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPresident Trump has made clear that American engagement requires genuine partnership, not exploitation of our goodwill and resources,\u201d she emphasised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South Sudanese officials continue to fail to uphold basic commitments under the status of forces agreement and demand to close critical bases in Wau and Bentiu, Locetta said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur position is unequivocal: any further non-cooperation by South Sudan will constitute a threat to the Mission\u2019s viability.
