{"id":1698,"date":"2025-11-08T06:48:15","date_gmt":"2025-11-08T06:48:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/goldentimessouthsudan.com\/?p=1698"},"modified":"2025-11-08T06:48:16","modified_gmt":"2025-11-08T06:48:16","slug":"niger-authorities-jail-3-journalists-on-cybercrime-charges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/goldentimessouthsudan.com\/index.php\/2025\/11\/08\/niger-authorities-jail-3-journalists-on-cybercrime-charges\/","title":{"rendered":"Niger authorities jail 3 journalists on cybercrime charges"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\"><em><sub>Niger\u2019s authorities. |\u00a9 AFP 2024|.<\/sub><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sub><em>Saturday 8 November, 2025<\/em><\/sub><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Committee to Protect Journalists calls on Nigerien authorities to free journalists Ibro Chaibou, Youssouf S\u00e9riba, and Oumarou Abou Kan\u00e9, who were&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=6ad2c1e7bfaa1357bb4387b58&amp;id=fbc41562d5&amp;e=50bd10efca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">remanded<\/a>&nbsp;in southern Niger\u2019s Kollo prison on November 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The three were initially arrested on October 30 and are accused of sending an invitation to a government news conference to an exile who worked for the ousted President Mohamed&nbsp;Bazoum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On November 3, an investigating judge in the capital, Niamey,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=6ad2c1e7bfaa1357bb4387b58&amp;id=655e8e5790&amp;e=50bd10efca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">charged<\/a>&nbsp;six journalists with \u201cdisseminating data likely to disturb public order,\u201d a cybercrime with a penalty of up to five years in jail, CPJ was told by their lawyer, Boudal Effred Mouloul, as well as two people with knowledge of the case, who spoke on condition of anonymity, citing fear of reprisals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The six journalists, all with privately owned outlets, are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Moussa Kaka, CEO, Radio T\u00e9l\u00e9vision Saraounia (RTS) group;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chaibou, newsroom manager, RTS;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>S\u00e9riba, publishing director, Les \u00c9chos du Niger news site;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Kan\u00e9, owner, Le H\u00e9risson satirical newspaper;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Souleymane Oumarou Brah, publishing director, La Voix du Peuple newspaper; and,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Abdoul Aziz Id\u00e9, RTS news presenter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Chaibou has been in detention since October 30, while the other five and an unnamed RTS driver were&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=6ad2c1e7bfaa1357bb4387b58&amp;id=8b2ea5284f&amp;e=50bd10efca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">detained<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=6ad2c1e7bfaa1357bb4387b58&amp;id=0e4ea5c062&amp;e=50bd10efca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">by<\/a>&nbsp;Niamey judicial police, questioned, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=6ad2c1e7bfaa1357bb4387b58&amp;id=86a8e55ffc&amp;e=50bd10efca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">released<\/a>&nbsp;the same day, then&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=6ad2c1e7bfaa1357bb4387b58&amp;id=c8b6f8d9d7&amp;e=50bd10efca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rearrested<\/a>&nbsp;on November 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On November 3, the driver was freed without charge, along with Kaka, Brah, and Aziz, who were placed under judicial supervision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe instrumentalization of cybercrime laws for meaningless accusations provides further evidence of Nigerien authorities\u2019 backsliding on press freedom,\u201d said Moussa Ngom, CPJ\u2019s Francophone Africa representative. \u201cAuthorities in Niger must release Ibro Chaibou, Youssouf S\u00e9riba, and Oumarou Abou Kan\u00e9 and drop the charges against all unjustly prosecuted journalists.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, Niger\u2019s head of state, Abdourahamane Tchiani, who&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=6ad2c1e7bfaa1357bb4387b58&amp;id=e90a78964b&amp;e=50bd10efca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">overthrew<\/a>&nbsp;the democratically elected Bazoum presidency in 2023,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=6ad2c1e7bfaa1357bb4387b58&amp;id=3b26a5e218&amp;e=50bd10efca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">increased<\/a>&nbsp;the sentences for cybercrimes, which have since been used&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=6ad2c1e7bfaa1357bb4387b58&amp;id=e5a3b589c8&amp;e=50bd10efca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">regularly<\/a>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=6ad2c1e7bfaa1357bb4387b58&amp;id=190ee8292c&amp;e=50bd10efca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">detain<\/a>&nbsp;journalists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On October 29, Hamid Amadou N\u2019gad\u00e9, a former communications adviser to Bazoum,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=6ad2c1e7bfaa1357bb4387b58&amp;id=5d6a579ea5&amp;e=50bd10efca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">published<\/a>&nbsp;on Facebook a news conference invitation from the Solidarity Fund for the Safeguarding of the Homeland (<a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=6ad2c1e7bfaa1357bb4387b58&amp;id=b755a78139&amp;e=50bd10efca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FSSP<\/a>), which was set up in 2023 to finance the state\u2019s anti-terrorism fight. In the post, N\u2019gad\u00e9 said that the government was going to officially announce mandatory&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=6ad2c1e7bfaa1357bb4387b58&amp;id=47ba9800fe&amp;e=50bd10efca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">deductions<\/a>&nbsp;on salaries and mobile money transfers \u2014 which it&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=6ad2c1e7bfaa1357bb4387b58&amp;id=60e4d6d32f&amp;e=50bd10efca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">did<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>N\u2019gad\u00e9 was one of several of the former president\u2019s allies who were&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=6ad2c1e7bfaa1357bb4387b58&amp;id=a9a3d9f49f&amp;e=50bd10efca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stripped<\/a>&nbsp;of their nationality in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two people with knowledge of the case told CPJ that Kaka \u2014 a veteran journalist and correspondent for Radio France Internationale (RFI) until it was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=6ad2c1e7bfaa1357bb4387b58&amp;id=5a7ae4cbdb&amp;e=50bd10efca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">banned<\/a>&nbsp;in Niger \u2014 had received the invitation to the news conference and sent it to his colleague Chaibou, who shared it in a WhatsApp group with S\u00e9riba, Kan\u00e9, and Brah, who are regular co-debaters on Saraounia TV\u2019s weekly \u201cClub de la presse\u201d show, which Chaibou hosts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CPJ\u2019s calls to request comment from the police, FSSP, and the Ministry of Communication went unanswered.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Niger\u2019s authorities. |\u00a9 AFP 2024|.
