The long-serving President of the Republic of South Sudan, Gen. Salva Kiir Mayardit, in an unprecedented decree, appointed his daughter as the presidential envoy for special programs, the position previously held by Vice President Benjamin Bol Mel, who is entrusted with overseeing the country\u2019s economy, and is believed to be the president’s son-in-law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a decree announced on the state-owned television (South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation) on Wednesday evening, President Kiir appointed Adut Salva Kiir Mayardit, who also heads the charity organisation ASK (Adut Salva Kiir).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adut\u2019s charity organisation (ASK) has been donating food items and water boreholes to the soldiers to enhance their living conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Kiir headed the regional government formed as a result of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in 2005, and was elected in 2010 in the Sudan\u2019s general elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2011, following the secession of South Sudan from Sudan, President Kiir was tasked to organise the first-ever general elections for the people of South Sudan to elect their leaders, a dream frustrated by the 2013 conflict, where civilians bore the brunt of atrocities that claimed an estimated 500,000 to 700,000 lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The IGAD-backed revitalised agreement on the resolution of conflict in South Sudan faces potential collapse as the parties to the conflict show no sign of political will to resolve their issues through dialogue and implement the remaining chapters of the agreement to pave the way for general elections at the end of the transitional period.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
