The Committee to Protect Journalists called on Zimbabwean authorities to release newspaper editor Faith Zaba, who was arrested on July 1. She is facing charges of \u201cundermining or insulting the authority of the president\u201d in connection with a satirical column.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis case sends the message that Zimbabwe\u2019s President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his administration are so fragile that they are easily threatened by a critical column,\u201d said CPJ Africa Program Coordinator Muthoki Mumo. \u201cIt\u2019s also a reminder of this government\u2019s willingness to waste public resources by throwing journalists behind bars. Authorities in Zimbabwe must release Faith Zaba unconditionally and without delay.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police summoned Zaba to appear at the central police station in the capital, Harare, on July 1, where they charged her over the June 27 satirical column<\/a> about Mnangagwa\u2019s government published in her newspaper, the business weekly Zimbabwe Independent<\/a>, according to her lawyer, Chris Mhike. Mhike told CPJ that Zaba has been unwell and was \u201cseverely ill\u201d at the time of her arrest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On July 2, Zaba appeared at the magistrate\u2019s court in Harare, where her bail hearing was deferred to July 3 after the state requested more time to verify her medical history, according to <\/a>multiple<\/a> <\/a>local<\/a> <\/a>news<\/a> <\/a>reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u201cMuckracker\u201d column<\/a> linked to Zaba\u2019s arrest said that Zimbabwe was a \u201cmafia state,\u201d citing the administration\u2019s alleged interference in the politics of neighboring countries, and said that the current government was \u201cobsessed with keeping itself in power.\u201d Under Zimbabwe\u2019s  Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act<\/a>, Zaba could face a $300 fine<\/a> or imprisonment not exceeding one year, or both, if convicted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CPJ has documented an ongoing crackdown on dissent<\/a> in Zimbabwe, amid political tension. In February, authorities arrested <\/a>Blessed Mhlanga<\/a>, a journalist with Alpha Media Holdings, and <\/a>held him<\/a> for over 10 weeks on baseless charges of incitement in connection with his coverage of war veterans who demanded Mnangagwa\u2019s resignation. The Zimbabwe Independent is a subsidiary of Alpha Media Holdings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
