Nairobi, June 25, 2025\u2014The Committee to Protect Journalists is alarmed by Kenyan authorities\u2019 Wednesday ban on live coverage of deadly protests, in which at least two journalists were injured, and the shutdown of at least three broadcasters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Protesters<\/a> took to the streets in most of Kenya\u2019s 47 counties<\/a> to mark the one-year anniversary<\/a> of anti-tax demonstrations, in which at least 60 people<\/a> were killed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several people were killed<\/a> in Wednesday\u2019s violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRestricting protest coverage sends a clear message that President William Ruto\u2019s government is not committed to democratic values or the constitutional freedoms he has vowed to protect,\u201d said CPJ Regional Director Angela Quintal. \u201cAuthorities must investigate attacks on journalists, ensuring accountability, rescind the ban on live coverage, and desist from further censorship.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a directive, reviewed by CPJ, the Communications Authority of Kenya ordered<\/a> \u201call television and radio stations to stop any live coverage of the demonstrations\u201d or face unspecified \u201cregulatory action.\u201d The information technology regulator cited constitutional<\/a> provisions that prevent freedom of expression involving \u201cpropaganda for war\u201d and \u201cincitement to violence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police and Authority officials then switched off the broadcast signal of several privately owned media houses, including NTV<\/a>, K24<\/a>, and KTN<\/a>, which continued to share content online and on social media<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Civil society<\/a> organizations, including the Kenya Editors\u2019 Guild<\/a> challenged the ban, citing a November High Court <\/a>ruling that the Authority did not have the constitutional mandate to set or enforce media standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Late Wednesday, the Law Society of Kenya secured High Court orders, reviewed by CPJ, directing broadcast signals to be restored immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NTV reporter Ruth Sarmwei was treated in hospital after being hit<\/a> on the leg by an unknown projectile while interviewing<\/a> protestors in the city of Nakuru, Joseph Openda, chairperson of the Nakuru Journalists Association, told CPJ. Standard Media Group said its photojournalist David Gichuru was \u201cstruck by a stone<\/a> hurled by a protestor\u201d in the capital Nairobi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CPJ\u2019s requests for comment via email to the Communications Authority of Kenya and via messaging app to its director general David Mugonyi did not receive replies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
