The Committee to Protect Journalists issued a statement calling on Togolese authorities to rescind a three-month broadcasting ban<\/a> on France 24 television network and Radio France Internationale (RFI) for allegedly undermining stability with biased reporting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On June 16, Togo\u2019s regulatory High Authority for Audiovisual and Communication (HAAC) suspended<\/a> the two outlets, which are subsidiaries of the French government-owned France M\u00e9dias Monde citing<\/a> \u201crepeated failures\u201d in \u201cimpartiality, rigor and fact-checking.\u201d It said the outlets had aired statements that were \u201cinaccurate, biased, or even contrary to established facts, undermining the stability of republican institutions and the image of the country,\u201d without providing further details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is unfortunate that Togo is following a worrying trend across West Africa of censoring RFI and France 24 for their local reporting, depriving citizens of important sources of information,\u201d said CPJ Francophone Africa Representative Moussa Ngom. \u201cTogolese regulatory authorities must allow RFI and France 24 to resume broadcasting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement<\/a>, RFI and France 24 said they were \u201csurprised\u201d to learn of their suspension \u201cwithout notice\u201d and that their teams delivered \u201cverified, impartial, and balanced information\u201d in compliance with a licensing agreement between the HAAC and France M\u00e9dias Monde, which is in charge of French international broadcasting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In early June, protests<\/a> erupted calling for President Faure Gnassingb\u00e9 to resign<\/a>, following the arrest<\/a> of local musician Aamron, who had called for demonstrations. Gnassingb\u00e9 has been in power since his father died in 2005 and could rule for life<\/a> due to recent constitutional changes<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On June 6, Flore Monteau, a correspondent with the French public broadcaster TV5 Monde, was briefly detained<\/a> and forced to delete videos of the protests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the last three years, Mali<\/a>, <\/a>Burkina Faso<\/a>, and <\/a>Niger<\/a> have also suspended France 24 and RFI indefinitely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
