Media rights group, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), called on the Senegalese authorities to end the persecution of journalist Ren\u00e9 Capain Bass\u00e8ne, whose lifetime prison sentence<\/a> was upheld by the Senegalese Supreme Court on 2 May 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is deeply worrying that Ren\u00e9 Capain Bass\u00e8ne\u2019s life sentence has been upheld despite all the flaws in the investigation<\/a> that led to his imprisonment and the documented abuses he suffered behind bars,\u201d said Moussa Ngom, CPJ\u2019s representative for Francophone Africa. \u201cSenegalese authorities must clarify the current conditions of detention of Ren\u00e9 Capain Bass\u00e8ne and implement all possible means to ensure his release.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the Supreme Court\u2019s ruling, Bass\u00e8ne was transferred<\/a> overnight on May 3 to the Senegalese capital of Dakar, where he was placed in a special ward for sick detainees at Aristide Le Dantec Hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bass\u00e8ne was arrested in 2018 in connection<\/a> with the deaths of 14 loggers shot to death in the Bayotte Forest in the southern Casamance area of Senegal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2022, he was sentenced<\/a> to life in prison for complicity in murder, attempted murder, and criminal association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A 2025 CPJ investigation<\/a> found that the case against Bass\u00e8ne was severely flawed, as the journalist\u2019s co-accused were forced to implicate him or sign inaccurate interview records. CPJ also found that the case relied on inconsistent evidence and that the journalist was mistreated behind bars. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
