He is seen here in the hospital following his abduction. |Photo: Courtesy of Dr. Benjamin Cigoho|<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tuesday, 22 April 2025<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Committee to Protect Journalists deeply alarmed by the mistreatment of Congolese journalist \u00c9m\u00e9rite Amisi Musada, who was abducted by men in civilian clothes on April 15 after being threatened over his reporting on the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, and calls for authorities to hold those responsible to account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Four days after Amisi, a reporter with the privately owned news website D\u00e9boutrdc.net,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=6ad2c1e7bfaa1357bb4387b58&amp;id=81e80acd05&amp;e=50bd10efca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">went missing<\/a>&nbsp;in Bukavu, the capital of the DRC\u2019s eastern South Kivu province, he was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=6ad2c1e7bfaa1357bb4387b58&amp;id=5df7a98806&amp;e=50bd10efca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">found<\/a>&nbsp;naked on the edge of nearby Lake Kivu on April 19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amisi, who spoke with CPJ from his bed at a Bukavu hospital, said that he was taken and tortured by unidentified men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bukavu is under the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=6ad2c1e7bfaa1357bb4387b58&amp;id=fa55f297a5&amp;e=50bd10efca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">control<\/a>&nbsp;of the M23 rebel group, which in recent months has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=6ad2c1e7bfaa1357bb4387b58&amp;id=57c6e0ed9a&amp;e=50bd10efca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">advanced<\/a>&nbsp;in the country\u2019s eastern provinces against the DRC military.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDRC authorities and the M23 rebels, who now control the city of Bukavu, must conduct thorough investigations into the abduction and mistreatment of journalist \u00c9m\u00e9rite Amisi Musada and ensure accountability,\u201d said Angela Quintal, CPJ\u2019s Africa regional director, from Luanda, Angola. \u201cThe safety of journalists must be a priority for all sides in the fighting, which has intensified in the eastern DRC.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amisi told CPJ that when he left his house, \u201cI was blocked by four people in civilian clothes, one of whom sprayed a gas in my nose to the point of losing consciousness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When he woke up in a house somewhere, Amisi was beaten with a stick, sodomized with a rubber rod, and \u201csubjected to a long interrogation about my reports on the war in the east of the country,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Four men with revolvers interrogated him about his outlet, including the password to gain administrative access to the site and sources for their war coverage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Amisi did not provide them with the information, the men stripped him, put him in their vehicle, and left him at the edge of the lake, where he was found by a civilian and taken to the hospital, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amisi has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=6ad2c1e7bfaa1357bb4387b58&amp;id=1c90de22b1&amp;e=50bd10efca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">published<\/a>&nbsp;several&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=6ad2c1e7bfaa1357bb4387b58&amp;id=04f0cbf58e&amp;e=50bd10efca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">articles<\/a>&nbsp;on the clashes between&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=6ad2c1e7bfaa1357bb4387b58&amp;id=c5454fb53a&amp;e=50bd10efca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">M23 and the military<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On April 10, Amisi had received threatening WhatsApp messages, which CPJ reviewed, from a sender who identified themselves as a DRC army general named Guy Kapinga.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One message, addressed to \u201cRwandan traitors\u201d and written in the local Lingala language, said: \u201cYou are eating up the money of the West in order to sabotage the efforts of the head of state. I know your church well, and we are keeping an eye on you. You will not flee Bukavu, continue to publish articles against the head of state and the army. We will have you in a short time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CPJ repeatedly called the number that sent the messages, but the line did not connect.
