The Committee to Protect Journalists calls on Benin\u2019s regulatory High Authority for Audiovisual and Communication (HAAC) to reverse its suspension<\/a> of the privately owned news site B\u00e9nin Web TV for reporting on alleged inconsistencies in the media regulator\u2019s budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In its March 12 <\/a>decision<\/a>, the HAAC also withdrew Benin Web TV director Paul Arnaud Deguenon\u2019s press card over his outlet\u2019s <\/a>January 21<\/a> and <\/a>23<\/a> reporting that said the HAAC presented \u201cerroneous\u201d figures to parliament\u2019s budget committee and its president demanded a new official car. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe media regulator should allow B\u00e9nin Web TV and journalist Paul Arnaud Deguenon to resume reporting,\u201d said Moussa Ngom, CPJ\u2019s Francophone Africa representative. \u201cBenin\u2019s High Authority for Audiovisual and Communication should respect journalists\u2019 right to question the management of public funds, instead of punishing B\u00e9nin Web TV for scrutinizing the regulator\u2019s finances.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deguenon attended a public hearing<\/a> at HAAC\u2019s offices on March 11 where he was ordered to publish an apology as the regulator said the journalist failed to provide evidence to support his outlet\u2019s allegations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In response, B\u00e9nin Web TV said that its journalism was based on facts and precise terms, with no desire to harm the HAAC. The media outlet published<\/a>three letters from the HAAC and Deguenon\u2019s responses, explaining that its reporting was based on the HAAC\u2019s own 2025 budget presentation<\/a> and public statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In its decision, the HAAC said that \u201cDeguenon reoffended on the same day in his baseless accusations\u201d and had \u201csharply attacked\u201d the regulator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The HAAC\u2019s indefinite suspension of Benin Web TV appears to contravene its 2023 authorization<\/a>of the outlet\u2019s operations, which specifies that suspensions for noncompliance with a formal regulatory notice may not exceed one month.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
