{"id":1312,"date":"2025-03-07T14:30:45","date_gmt":"2025-03-07T14:30:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/goldentimessouthsudan.com\/?p=1312"},"modified":"2025-03-07T14:30:46","modified_gmt":"2025-03-07T14:30:46","slug":"gunmen-attack-un-helicopter-killing-crew-member","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/goldentimessouthsudan.com\/index.php\/2025\/03\/07\/gunmen-attack-un-helicopter-killing-crew-member\/","title":{"rendered":"Gunmen attack UN helicopter killing crew member"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>UN officials, including Nicholas Haysom, in Jonglei, South Sudan, for an on-the-ground inspection<\/em>. <em>|Courtesy: UN|.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>United Nations helicopter conducting an evacuation process in Nasir, in Upper Nile State, came under fire today, resulting in the killing of a crew member and serious injuries to two others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, several members of the South Sudan People\u2019s Defence Forces (SSPDF), including an injured General, were killed during the attempt by the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) to extract them from the area, which was made at the request of all parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The evacuation was part of UNMISS\u2019 efforts to help prevent violence in Nasir and de-escalate political tensions, following recent clashes between the SSPDF and armed youth which caused significant casualties and civilian displacement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe attack on UNMISS personnel is utterly abhorrent and may constitute a war crime under international law. We deeply regret the tragic loss of our colleague and express our sincere condolences to his loved ones,\u201d said the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of UNMISS, Nicholas Haysom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe also regret the killing of those that we were attempting to extract, particularly when assurances of safe passage had been received. UNMISS urges an investigation to determine those responsible and hold them accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mission is calling on all actors to refrain from further violence and for the country\u2019s leaders to urgently intervene to resolve tensions through dialogue and ensure that the security situation in Nasir, and more broadly, does not deteriorate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The United Nations called on parties to the conflict to adhere to their commitment to uphold the ceasefire and protect the integrity of the Revitalized Peace Agreement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UN officials, including Nicholas Haysom, in Jonglei, South Sudan, for an on-the-ground inspection. |Courtesy: UN|.
