A pressure group, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) calls on the Zimbabwean authorities to free broadcast journalist Blessed Mhlanga, who has been in detention<\/a> since February 24 on charges of incitement<\/a> in connection to his critical interviews with a war veteran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is absolutely shameful that Blessed Mhlanga has been thrown behind bars simply because he gave voice to a war veteran\u2019s criticism of Zimbabwe\u2019s government,\u201d said CPJ Africa Program Coordinator, Muthoki Mumo, in Nairobi. \u201cZimbabwean authorities should free Mhlanga unconditionally and respond to their citizens\u2019 concerns, rather than punishing the messenger.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mhlanga, who works with the privately owned Heart and Soul TV, said on the social media platform X<\/a> that three armed men came to his office searching for him on February 17, soon after which the police phoned him to ask him to come in for questioning. On February 21, the police issued a statement<\/a> seeking information about Mhlanga\u2019s whereabouts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mhlanga responded to the police summons on February 24 and was arrested on two counts of transmission of data messages \u201cinciting violence or damage to property,\u201d according to the Zimbabwe chapter of the Media Institute of Southern Africa<\/a>, the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights<\/a> network, and Mhlanga\u2019s lawyer Chris Mhike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On February 25, prosecutors opposed<\/a> Mhlanga\u2019s bail application, arguing that he was a flight risk, Mhike told CPJ. The court is due to decide<\/a> on his application on February 27.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities allege that the offenses were committed in Mhlanga\u2019s November 2024<\/a> and January 2025<\/a> interviews with Blessed Geza, a veteran of Zimbabwe\u2019s war for independence from white minority rule, who called on President Emmerson Mnangagwa to resign<\/a>, accusing him of nepotism, corruption, and failing to address economic issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If found guilty, Mhlanga could be jailed for up to five years and fined<\/a> up to US$700 under the 2021 Cyber and Data Protection Act<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mhlanga was previously assaulted and arrested<\/a> in 2022 while covering the attempted arrest of an opposition politician.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CPJ\u2019s phone calls and messages to Zimbabwe\u2019s National Prosecution Authority communications officer Angelina Munyeriwa and police spokesperson Paul Nyathi went unanswered.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
