The Committee to Protect Journalists urged Beninese authorities to reverse their January 21 orders suspending\u00a0six privately owned media outlets<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 news sites Reporter M\u00e9dias Monde, Les Pharaons, and Crystal News, the Mme Actu Tiktok account, and Le Patriote and Audace Info newspapers \u2014\u00a0and to return the press card of Audace Info\u2019s publication director Romuald Alingo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBenin\u2019s media regulator must allow these six news outlets to resume publishing and let journalist Romuald Alingo continue with his work,\u201d said Moussa Ngom, CPJ\u2019s Francophone Africa Representative. \u201cAuthorities should focus on preserving and expanding freedom of information in Benin and not impose undue restrictions that can have a troubling effect on the entire profession.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In its order<\/a> suspending the four \u201cunauthorized websites\u201d Reporter M\u00e9dias Monde<\/a>, Les Pharaons<\/a>, Crystal News<\/a>, and the Mme Actu<\/a> TikTok account, the regulatory High Authority for Audiovisual and Communication (HAAC) said that the outlets had been \u201cthe subject of numerous complaints\u201d and their content contained \u201cunfounded allegations.\u201d They had also broadcast content without prior authorization from the HAAC in violation of Article 252 of the Information and Communication Code<\/a>, it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In another suspension order<\/a>, the HAAC cited complaints that Audace Info regularly published \u201cfalse allegations which discredit the persons concerned and harm their honor and reputation,\u201d and said that Arlingo had failed to respond to the regulator\u2019s summons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lastly, Le Patriote<\/a> was suspended<\/a> over its publication<\/a> in December of an exiled<\/a> politician\u2019s criticism of Beninese President Patrice Talon and a January editorial<\/a> critical of the army for failing to prevent a border attack<\/a> in which 28 soldiers died. The HAAC also said the outlet \u201cnot only became a bi-weekly without the required formalities but also appears online,\u201d citing a regulation<\/a> approving Le Patriote as a weekly paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HAAC responded to CPJ\u2019s email requesting comment and copies of the complaints and said the letter would be forwarded \u201cto whom it may concern.\u201d The regulator added, \u201cHAAC\u2019s mission is to protect and promote freedom of expression in accordance with the law.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
