Algerian authorities arrested freelance journalist and political activist Abdelwakil Blamm on 29 December 2024 outside his home in the Cheraga suburb of Algiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Committee to Project Journalists (CPJ) called on the Algerian authorities to immediately and unconditionally release Abdelwakil Blamm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAbdelwakil Blamm\u2019s detention is a troubling escalation of the ongoing crackdown on press freedom in Algeria,\u201d said CPJ Interim MENA Program Coordinator Yeganeh Rezaian, in Washington, D.C. \u201cAlgerian authorities must immediately release Blamm, ensure his safety, and cease targeting journalists and activists for their work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Sunday, the state prosecutor at the Ch\u00e9raga court ordered<\/a> Blamm\u2019s detention pending trial, after accusing<\/a> him of spreading false news, harming national unity, and belonging to a terrorist group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Local journalists believe that Blamm\u2019s arrest stems from his Facebook page<\/a>, which has over 15 thousand followers, where he reports on local political and social issues. Blamm\u2019s arrest is part of a new government wave of arrests against the opposition following the widespread social media campaign \u201c#manich_radi<\/a>,\u201d which expresses discontent with the regime, according to a local journalist who spoke with CPJ on the condition of anonymity, citing fear of reprisal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blamm is also a founder<\/a> of the 2014 civilian-led Barakat movement<\/a> that emerged in opposition of former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika\u2019s authoritarian regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a separate incident, authorities in northeast Algeria arrested<\/a> journalist Mustapha Bendjama<\/a> on December 30, 2024, at a coffee shop in the city of Annaba. Bendjama was released without charge January 2 after authorities questioned him about his Facebook posts, placed him under judicial control, then banned him from leaving the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CPJ\u2019s email to the Algerian Ministry of Interior requesting comment on Blamm\u2019s and Bendjama\u2019s arrests did not receive any response.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
