United Nations bodies and South Sudan peace monitors have paid tribute to Nicholas “Fink” Haysom, the head of the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), following news of his death.
The UN Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan said it was “profoundly saddened” by the passing of Mr Haysom, describing him as a key figure in advancing peace, justice and constitutional governance in the country.
Mr Haysom, a South African national, had served as Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and head of UNMISS since 2021. During his tenure, he played a central role in supporting the implementation of South Sudan’s 2018 revitalised peace agreement.
The Commission credited him with helping to shape South Sudan’s peace trajectory, citing his earlier contributions to the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement that paved the way for the country’s independence.
“He brought intellectual clarity, political acuity, and principled leadership to some of the most complex peace processes of our time,” the Commission said in a statement, adding that he consistently championed human rights, accountability and the inclusion of victims’ voices.
The Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC), which oversees the peace deal, also expressed “great sadness” at his death, calling it a significant loss to South Sudan’s ongoing peace process.
RJMEC said Mr Haysom brought decades of diplomatic experience to the role, including serving as a legal adviser to former South African President Nelson Mandela, and noted his deep understanding of South Sudan’s political and security landscape.
“His expertise, drive, and deep understanding of the political and security dynamics of South Sudan will be missed by all,” the body said.
Both institutions highlighted his commitment to the rule of law and his ability to foster cooperation among national and international stakeholders working toward lasting peace.
Tributes also described Mr Haysom as a humble and dedicated leader whose work inspired colleagues across the United Nations system and beyond.
Condolences have been extended to his family, colleagues and the wider UN community, with officials saying his legacy would endure in the institutions he strengthened and the peace efforts he helped advance in South Sudan.
