South Africa’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has condemned the Confederation of African Football (CAF) over reports that Senegal’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 victory has been overturned and awarded to Morocco.
In a statement, the South African opposition party led by Julius Malema described the decision as “unjust” and accused CAF of misapplying its own rules.
The EFF argued that the final match was neither abandoned nor suspended by the referee — the only official with authority to halt a game once it has started.
It said the referee allowed play to continue despite disruptions and that Morocco remained actively involved, including taking a penalty during the match.
“The game proceeded to its natural conclusion, with Senegal securing victory in open play,” the statement said.
CAF has not publicly provided a detailed explanation for the reported decision.
The EFF also raised concerns about what it described as Morocco’s influence within African football structures, pointing to the country’s role as a frequent host of major tournaments. It suggested that financial and political factors may be shaping decisions within CAF — an allegation Morocco has previously denied.
In addition, the party cited complaints about tournament conditions, including accommodation, transport arrangements and incidents during matches that it said may have affected fairness.
The EFF said it supports any move by Senegal to challenge the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
The controversy has prompted wider debate about governance and transparency in African football, with observers warning it could affect confidence in CAF’s handling of major competitions.
CAF and the Senegalese Football Federation have not yet responded publicly to the claims.
