Authorities in Kajo-Keji County received the bodies of five SSPDF (South Sudan People’s Defence Forces) soldiers killed in the recent clashes with the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) in Nyainga village.

The recent attack by the UPDF inside South Sudan’s Kajo-Keji County sparked fear among the communities living along the South Sudan-Uganda border.

The UPDF launched this attack on Monday, July 28, 2025, on an SSPDF position in Nyainga-Muda village. This incident also led to the displacement of thousands of civilians to nearby safer villages.

Wani Jackson Mule, the commissioner of Kajo-Keji County, confirmed the deaths of the five soldiers after receiving their bodies at Mundari Civil Hospital on Tuesday, 29 July.

He urged citizens to remain calm, assuring them that the government is working to de-escalate the conflict and uphold the ceasefire.

Maj. Gen. Lul Ruai Koang, the SSPDF Spokesperson, also confirmed the attack. He stated that the army chiefs of both countries have established communication channels to enforce a ceasefire and investigate the root causes of the conflict.

It is worth noting that in June 2020, the UPDF attacked an SSPDF position in the same area, leading to the deaths of three soldiers and injuries to a dozen others.

Attempts to get comments from the UPDF were unsuccessful at the time of this report.
