Kenya’s defense chief and nine other top army officers died in a military helicopter crash in a remote area of the country on Thursday, April 18.

Kenya’s President William Ruto convened an urgent meeting of the National Security Council after the sad news emerged, that the army chief and nine other senior army officers died in a tragic military helicopter crash.

President Ruto, “Today at 2:20 pm, our nation suffered a tragic air accident… I am deeply saddened to announce the passing of General Francis Omondi Ogolla.”

President Ruto said nine military personnel on board were also killed while two survived.

He dispatched the Kenya Air Force to the scene of the tragic helicopter crash to probe the cause of the crash that happened in Elgeyo Marakwet county, northwest of the capital Nairobi.

“A distinguished four-star general has fallen in the course of duty and the service of the country,” he said.

“Our motherland has lost one of her most valiant generals, gallant officers, service men and woman.”

Ruto announced three days of mourning from Friday, with official flags flying at half mast.

“They were in the area on a security mission because there are KDF soldiers deployed in the region,” President Ruto added.
